Filtration – Air Purification

The ongoing and evolving situation regarding  COVID-19 has resulted in ever increasing calls and questions regarding filter efficiencies, air purification, and general IAQ.

Initially the W.H.O. advised the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) was not airborne, (like measles), but it was borne by air, via droplets, (coughing sneezing, etc). Thus the emphasis on plenty of hand washing, surface cleaning, use of PPE, etc.

However, a recent announcement by the W.H.O. advised recent tests have discovered COVID-19  may in fact be an aerosol, thus airborne, increasing the need to address air filtration and treatment/purification.

Simply upgrading one’s filter efficiency … EG: Replacing MERV 6 filters with MERV 13, is not terribly effective, gives a false sense of security, and potentially exacerbate the problem by restricting air flow.

These efficiencies assume the filter is sealed tightly in place, and 100% of the air goes through the filter. Pathogens like virus and bacteria, that do make their way to a particulate filter are collected only, they are not neutralized. To neutralize these submicron organisms, and render them inert, they must be exposed to something like NBPI (Needle Point Bi-polar Ionization), UVC, or some other treatment. NPBI and UVC have tested to reduce the SARS-CoV-2 virus >99% after only 30 minutes exposure.

If someone is truly concerned about reducing significantly potentially harmful pathogens from their air delivery system, and long term IAQ, one must consider Needle Point Bi-polar Ionization or UVC technology.

There is some bias developing toward Needle Point Bi-polar Ionization technology over UVC because NPBI is a one and done system. It requires no replacement parts (bulbs), arguably safer to use, more environmentally friendly, (no disposable bulbs), and requires no maintenance.

Like UVC, NPBI will neutralize and reduce significantly a very broad spectrum of virus, bacteria, and other harmful pathogens. It is also very effective on VOC’s and odours.

To be clear, NPBI and UVC are not cures for Covid-19. They are technologies that are tested and proven to help to reduce the Sars-CoV-2 virus which causes Covid-19 which in turn helps reduce risk of exposure to it.
